Are you excited about the World Cup?

From BBC Learning English

The 2018 World Cup is about to kick off in Russia. Many of us will be glued to our TV screens to follow the ups and downs of our own nation's teams and to see who finally becomes the world champion.
But not everyone will be sharing the excitement of the tournament. In this programme we hear from people with different viewpoints; Neil and Rob discuss the vocabulary they use.

Phrasal verbs

Phrasal verbs

A phrasal verb is a verb that is made up of a main verb together with an adverb or a preposition, or both. Typically, their meaning is not obvious from the meanings of the individual words themselves. For example:
She has always looked down on me.
Fighting broke out among a group of 40 men.
I’ll see to the animals.
Don’t put me off, I’m trying to concentrate.
The report spelled out the need for more staff.

For instance, in the first example, the phrasal verb ‘to look down on someone’ doesn’t mean that you are looking down from a higher place at someone who is below you; it means that you think that you are better than someone.

Transitivity

Phrasal verbs can be intransitive (i.e. they have no object):
We broke up two years ago.
They set off early to miss the traffic.
He pulled up outside the cottage.

or transitive (i.e. they can have an object):
The police were called to break up the fight.
When the door is opened, it sets off an alarm.
They pulled the house down and redeveloped the site.

Word order

The verb and adverb elements which make up intransitive phrasal verbs are never separated:
✓  We broke up two years ago.
✗  We broke two years ago up.

The situation is different with transitive verbs, however. If the direct object  is a noun, you can say:
✓ They pulled the housedown.
 [direct object]
✓ They pulled down the house.

If the object is a pronoun  (such as it, him, her, them) , then the object always comes between the verb and the adverb:

✓ They pulled itdown.
 [direct  object]
✗ They pulled down it.

Review: Comparatives and Superlatives

Olá pessoal,
Esta semana vamos rever os comparativos e os superlativos!

Comparativo de Superioridade

Usamos para expressar a ideia de que uma pessoa ou coisa é superior em algum aspecto em relação a outra pessoa ou coisa. Usamos than ao introduzir o segundo termo da comparação.
  PALAVRAS PEQUENAS
coloca a terminação ER +  THAN

ex: She is taller than me ( ela é mais alta do que eu)

Smart – Ana is smarter than her sister. Ana é mais esperta que a sua irmã.
Cheap – This book is cheaper than that notebook. Este livro é mais barato do que aquele caderno.

  PALAVRAS GRANDES
MORE ....THAN

ex: She is more intelligent than me (ela é mais inteligente do que eu)

Expensive: A Ferrari is more expensive than a normal car.
Interesting: English is more interesting than mathematics.
Beautiful: Rio is more beautiful than São Paulo.

Comparativo de Inferioridade
Usamos quando queremos expressar a idéia de que uma pessoa ou coisa possui uma qualidade em menor medida que a outra.

LESS ...THAN

My book is less expensive than yours.
Belo Horizonte is less polluted than São Paulo.

Superlativo de Superioridade

Usamos quando queremos expressar a ideia de que uma pessoa ou coisa dentro de um grupo alcança o grau mais alto, em se tratando do aspecto em que é comparada.

-PALAVRAS PEQUENAS
THE .... palavra + est

Tom is the tallest boy in school.
Today is the hottest day of the year.

-PALAVRAS GRANDES

THE  MOST ....

This Ferrari is the most expensive car in this car shop.
That is the most beautiful house in my street.

 Superlativo de Inferioridade

Usamos quando queremos expressar a ideia de que uma pessoa ou coisa dentro de um grupo alcança o grau mais baixo, em se tratando do aspecto em que é comparada.

THE LEAST ...

Usamos The least + adjetivo ou advérbio. Não há diferença entre palavras pequenas e grandes.

This is the least expensive car in this car shop.
This exercise is the least difficult in the exam.

OBSERVAÇÕES

·         Palavras terminadas em consoante/vogal/consoante dobram a última consoante antes de receber -er ou -est.  ex: hot - hotter
·         Palavras terminadas em -e recebem apenas -e e –st. ex: large - larger
·         Palavras terminadas em -y precendido de consoante trocam o -y por -i ao receber -er e -est. ex: happy - happier
